Why redo DudesNude from scratch? Simply put: We had to. It was time.
The DudesNude code is 22 years old, which is 1,258 years old in tech years. It had elements tacked on and kluged together over the years and by now it’s become a tangled, inefficient jumble of code that cannot be updated further without taking it apart.
The codebase is obsolete. It was built on an older version of PHP and we needed to upgrade to PHP8. A lot of security improvements have been made in PHP over the last years and we wanted to bring that to DudesNude. It’s more reliable, faster, and more secure.
Recreating the database allows us to make that faster and more efficient too. Whereas the current database works OK, it was never built with the idea of how it might evolve in the future so tags and tables are not user friendly from our side of things. And because we need to recreate the database, we cannot launch 2.0 parallel to 1.0 (not giving you the option of using one or the other like we did with the cam room). We have to port all the information from 1.0 into 2.0 and just launch with that. This, I imagine, is going to cause some uproar because it’ll suddenly be different. But I hope this thread may mitigate some of that.
In addition to the codebase needing to be brought into the 21st century, a lot of methods of use have evolved since 2002. We’re all used to chatting in a txt-based method now instead of emails. We’re use to unlocking/locking our private pics for people rather than sending a password. We’re used to mobile far more than we were in 2002, etc… In order to change the front end methods of use, we had to change the code that powers them which meant writing it from scratch.
Furthermore, things like private-pics passwords just aren’t secure. We forget to change them or make them difficult to guess. They don’t blend seamlessly into the user experience, etc…. We just needed to bring this into the modern era.
I know many of you may be thinking “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. No DudesNude isn’t broken, but it’s certainly old and in need of love if we’re going to keep this unique and special community going strong.
In the coming weeks we launch the Beta. (A beta site is one that is stable enough to use, but still has bugs and things we’re working on, so it’ll take a bit of patience)
Thanks. And I hope you’re as excited as we are!
